The Churchill Coalition Government 11 May 1940 – 23 May 1945: Sir Stafford Cripps, on a special mission to India, conversing with Mr Gandhi on the steps of Birla House, Delhi. They are surrounded by Indian journalists and photographers. The mission vainly hoped to win the support of the Indian Congress Party for the Second World War by an offer of self-government.
